Summary

The business world is constantly changing, as new technology and developments are revealed almost daily. South Africa is still a growing country and changes as it grows. Any business, whether a start-up or an established organisation, needs to keep up with these changes if it intends to survive. However, most organisations, and indeed most people, are reluctant to change.

Change management requires an altered framework, focusing on the transformation and/or transition from one set of processes to a different set. Change, from a business perspective, requires employees to participate in a different way of thinking in order to achieve transformation.

The concept of change management involves the development change agent skills and the ability to identify the need for change in an organisation. There are different change management models and interventions, that focus on managing change using theories, values, strategies and techniques adjusted from behavioural science. This implies that change management requires altering employee behaviour. These models, however, do not address the key term ‘transformation’. The significance of transformation can be explained by providing an understanding of the term ‘organisational change’.
